Timothy M. Bovard --
pipe organ technician
Timothy M. Bovard, our senior technician, has his hand in many
aspects of a new Nichols & Simpson pipe organ, in addition to his duties tending to
service and repair of existing instruments under our care. Tim is responsible for
much of the electrical wiring and windchest action construction, and is often found on the
jobsite, resolving any number of various details. He also assists Mr. Simpson with
voicing and tuning of pipes, and helps to maintain the physical plant and equipment of the
Company.
Tim was bitten by the "pipe organ bug" as a teenage music
student bored with the sonic limits of the piano. This frustration led to organ
lessons, which led to meeting the organ curator, who noticed Tim's mechanical aptitude,
and eventually needed help with a repair in a VERY small area of that instrument.
With this initial inside glimpse of the wonderful "machine" that is a pipe
organ, he was hooked. Before joining Nichols & Simpson in 1994, he worked for
another organ company close to his hometown of Galesburg, Illinois. Tim is a member
of the American Institute of Organbuilders and the Organ Historical Society, and several
other "organ" organizations.
Duane Vanderpluym -- woodworker
Duane Vanderpluym, one of our woodworkers, came to Nichols &
Simpson from one of our sub-contractors, where he had built for himself an impressive
reputation in the fields of furniture and cabinet construction. In a relatively
short period of time, Duane has become quite proficient in the art of building organ
windchests, building frames and reservoirs. We at Nichols & Simpson are especially impressed with the obvious
pride Duane takes in the work he does. His attention to detail and his
"fussiness" about getting things Exactly Right are part of what makes him an
excellent team player here at Nichols & Simpson.
Jorge A. Osorio --
woodworker
Jorge Osorio is a native of Colombia in South America, where he
studied furniture design and construction and mass production. Upon his arrival in
the United States with his charming wife Lina, he worked for a time in museum-quality
antique restoration before moving to Newport, Arkansas. There, he caught the
attention of a Nichols & Simpson client who told us of his remarkable artistry and
suggested that we interview him. As soon as we saw his work, we knew he would be a
valuable asset to Nichols & Simpson. The strikingly beautiful cases on the organ
at Hendrix College are largely his work; when you look at them, you will know why we are
so proud to have him as a part of our team.
David C. Scribner --
pipe organ technician
David Scribner is originally from Chicago, Illinois,
and studied organ and church music at DePaul university with Arthur C. Becker and René
Dosogne. During his time at DePaul, he served as
Assistant Organist at the University Church under Dr. Becker and followed him as Organist
and Choirmaster of the church. Since then, he has held various other Organist /
Choirmaster positions around the country, and also has worked for several other
organbuilders. He is a member of the American Institute of Organbuilders
along with being the WebMaster for that organization.
David has also been involved with various organ-related
groups, including holding elected offices in several AGO Chapters, most recently as Dean
of the Pensacola, Florida Chapter. He has also been on the Board of Directors of the
Atlantic City Convention Hall Organ Society and is one of the performers on "The
Auditorium Organ," the compact disc recording of the giant Midmer-Losh.. He is
a member of the Organ Historical Society and the American Theatre Organ Society.
David is also a computer guru and operates Internet services out of his home including
acting as WebMaster / Designer for several organbuilders. He is the guiding light
behind several of the Internet organ mailing lists.
We are particularly delighted to be able to utilize
David's many skills and contacts within the organ industry, and feel that he will be a
valuable addition to our team.
Christian
C. Lentz --
pipe voicer
Christian Lentz is one of the
newest additions to the Nichols & Simpson family. Originally from
Neosho, Missouri (if you look in the southwest corner of Missouri, you'll find
it), he studied Music Education at Crowder College and then went on to Missouri
Southern State in Joplin. Some of his interests include a love for music,
history, and model railroading. His current duties at our shop are
assisting Mr. Simpson in the voicing room, learning the ropes in the art of
voicing organ pipes. His first project involvement with us was
the installation at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin in the Spring of 2005. With the proper training and guidance,
Christian looks to become an important member of our team here at Nichols
& Simpson.
Bryan K. Gray --
office manager
Bryan Gray, like everyone else at Nichols & Simpson, can tell
you the exact moment that he was introduced to the pipe organ. The fact that his moment
was longer ago than anyone else's makes his remembering it all that much more
incredible. Bryan earned Bachelors degrees in Organ and Music Theory /
Composition. In 1992, he joined Nichols & Simpson as office manager.
Within a short period of time, Bryan's computer expertise brought Nichols & Simpson
into the 20th century (of course, then we had to buy him a REAL computer to
operate.) This allowed us to begin utilizing CADD (computer-aided drawing and
design) in our work and streamlined many of the tasks associated with designing an
organ. Bryan is our main CADD technician. He is also the only member of the
Nichols & Simpson team who actually plays a pipe organ on a regular basis.
